Stuck on Christmas Gift Ideas?

A month-long compulsion to buy something, anything, for everyone.

How many times has a child opened a gift with a whole lot of excitement. Enjoying the process of unwrapping the gift and then 5 minutes later forgetting that they even received the toy in the first place. As adults were not much different. We buy gifts that we think will make others happy or sometimes we just buy things to please ourselves.

But is that really what this giving season is about?

This year consider doing something a little different with the following alternatives that may have a little more meaning than a material gift.

Consider giving an experience
I know for me that the most memorable gifts have been experiences. An experience creates memories that last forever. Especially if you can do that experience together with a loved one. An experience could be a day out at a new location, a sip and paint event (I organised this for Michelle’s birthday and we had a great time), a fast lap around a race track or a day spa. Another great option is concert tickets to an upcoming performance.

Consider donating to their favourite charity
Not only will your giving keep with the holiday spirit but it could also be tax deductible. Imagine not having to be part of the Christmas rush and skipping the shopping centre queues. Your loved one would really appreciate the thought and it may mean more than a gift to them.

Consider a course or a class
Why not give a gift that inspires people to take action on their passion. It could be a cooking class, a photography class or even a pottery class. Most people put their hobbies/interests on hold and never get around to learning more about them. When you pre-book a class then they will have to make time for it. There are many online courses, which can be done from the comfort of your own home.

Consider planting a tree
Planting a tree is like leaving a legacy, it symbolises your bond with that person and it’s a constant reminder of your relationship. Trees also symbolise growth, strength and success.

Consider a voucher for a family photo shoot
A picture tells a thousand words. A family photo shoot is a great way to capture a moment in time forever and that moment can be hung on a wall for you to see every day to remind you of the good times.

Whatever gift you decide to give this festive season, let’s not forget the ‘why’ we give and keep in line with the spirit of giving.

“Since you get more joy out of giving joy to others, you should put a good deal of thought into the happiness that you are able to give. ” – Eleanor Roosevelt
